Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) is a major initiative of the Government of India, which aims to provide a permanent house to every eligible citizen by 2022. The scheme covers both urban and rural areas and offers different sub-schemes for different income groups.
Benefits of the scheme:
Permanent House: Under this scheme, beneficiaries get a permanent house of 60-120 square meters depending on the size of their family.
Financial assistance: The government provides financial assistance for house construction. In urban areas the subsidy amount ranges from Rs 1.50 lakh to Rs 7.00 lakh, depending on the income of the beneficiary and the type of house, while in rural areas the amount ranges from Rs 1.30 lakh to Rs 3.30 lakh.
Other facilities: Under the scheme, facilities like toilets, electricity and water connections are also provided to the beneficiaries.
Eligibility:
Income: The annual income of the family should not exceed Rs 3 lakh in urban areas and Rs 1.5 lakh in rural areas.
Residence: The applicant must have resided for at least 3 years in the state or union territory where he/she wants a house.
House Ownership: The applicant or any member of his/her family should not already own a permanent house.

Online: Beneficiaries can apply online through PMAY portal (https://pmaymis.gov.in/).
Offline: Applicants can also apply offline by visiting their Gram Panchayat or Municipal office.
Progress of the scheme:
Till now, crores of people have been provided permanent houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. The government has taken several steps to make the scheme more effective, such as simplifying the online application process and entering into agreements with banks to provide financial assistance to the beneficiaries.
